Novo Sancti Petri Golf Course

Novo Sancti Petri Golf Course

There are many excellent golf courses in the area (see Links page). The attractive, 36 hole, Sevvy Ballesteros designed Novo Sancti Petri Golf Course (pictured) and the new 18 hole Melia Golf Course are both no more than a drive and long iron away from our villa. Another, 9 (soon to be 18) hole course, Campano Golf, is about 5km inland. Club hire, practice facilities and professional tuition (group and / or individual) are available at all courses. The beautiful Montenmedio Golf and Country Club, the exclusive Jack Nicklaus designed Montecastillo Resort course, the Jose Maria Olazabal designed Ballena Golf Club and the Sherry Golf Club are all within a 30 minutes drive. Further afield, the San Roque Club and the world famous Valderrama, scene of the 1997 Ryder Cup, are about 90 mins drive away on the Mediterranean coast just past Gibraltar.

Surfing

Kite-surfing - La Barrosa

Kite-surfing - La Barrosa

With the constant Atlantic rollers, the area is excellent for surfing with a number of surf schools for lessons and board hire locally. Tarifa, about 45 mins drive south, is a windsurfing and kite-surfing Mecca. Closer by, Canos de Meca near Cape Trafalgar is also a popular venue for all types of surfing when the conditions are right.

Fishing/Angling

Sea fishing, from boat , beach, and rocky headlands, is on the doorstep; fresh water fishing is available on a number of lakes inland.

Horseriding

Riding on La Barrosa Beach

Riding on La Barrosa Beach

Horseriding is a popular pastime in Andalucia. Jerez is known as the city of the horse and is a renowned equestrian centre. Locally, horses can be rented for riding in the extensive woodland trails and on the beach. The Montenmedio Club hosts international horse trials and has extensive facilities for the horse-loving visitor to enjoy.

Tennis & Swimming

Club de Tenis La Barrosa

Club de Tenis La Barrosa

Our villa is next to the local La Barrosa Tennis Club which boasts 12 all-weather floodlit courts available for public hire. The sea at La Barrosa and at most of the beaches along the coast is shallow and generally very safe for bathing. There are sheltered coves among the cliffs just south of Roche about 10 mins drive away. These coves cater for the naturist fraternity, as does the beach at El Palmar south of Conil. All the beaches on the coast have a Blue Flag for cleanliness and hygiene. The area can sometimes be windy, but this can be a blessing in the heat of high summer. Anyway, there is always shelter in the dunes. There are a number of new low-rise luxury hotels in Novo Sancti-Petri, all of which have extensive outdoor swimming pools accessible from the beach.

Walking / Bird Watching / Nature Parks

The whole area is protected by local laws to prevent over-development and retain the natural environment for public enjoyment. The Parque Nacional de Doñana is one of Europe's largest and most important wetland reserves and a major site for migrating birds. It is an immense area; the parque itself and surrounding parque natural or Entorno de Doñana (a protected buffer zone) amount to over 1,300 sq km in the provinces of Huelva, Sevilla and Cádiz. It is internationally for recognised for its great ecological wealth. Doñana has become a key centre in the world of conservationism. It is crossed by large numbers of migrating birds and is a birdwatching paradise. La Janda, a wetland north-west of Tarifa, is home to visiting cranes in great numbers. Other local species include Griffin Vultures, Eagles, White Storks, Flamingoes and Egrets. Closer to home and inland you can explore the whitewashed hilltop towns of Vejer and Medina Sidonia. The latter is evidence of Roman occupation and Roman excavations can be explored at Bolonia just north of Tarifa.
