The small seaside town of La Barrosa is situated on the southern outskirts of Chiclana de la Frontera, near Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz in Andalucia, southern Spain.

The area has not suffered from the over-development that characterises some of the other Spanish Costas despite having some of the most spectacular beaches in Spain, backed, not by ribbons of development, but by sand dunes, marshland, farmland and dense pine forests. With an average of 3200 hours of sunshine per year (the highest in Spain) and cooling sea breezes off the Atlantic ocean, it is a haven for holidays at almost any time of the year.

La Barrosa beach (pictured above right) is a glorious 7km stretch of golden sand, considered to be one of the finest beaches in Spain. Busier at its northern end with a promenade, shops, bars and restaurants it gets progressively less developed and 'wild' to the south. With a 'Blue Flag' for hygiene and cleanliness, it offers safe swimming, monitored by lifeguards in season, and excellent surfing. There are many other fine beaches in the vicinity.

Between late June and early September, the Costa de la Luz is still largely the preserve of Spanish holidaymakers seeking refuge from the stifling heat of the inland cities. Out of high summer season, there are few tourists, though the weather in Spring and Autumn is often perfect.

As part of the busy working town of Chiclana, La Barrosa has a significant and permanent local population which ensures that most of the facilities remain open throughout the year. It has many restaurants, bars, ATMs and 2 small supermarkets. Larger supermarkets (Supersol, Mercadona and Lidl) are 5 minutes drive away.

The house itself is situated in a quiet residential street, 10 minutes walk (2 minute drive) through pine woods from La Barrosa beach. The La Barrosa tennis club, which boasts 12 floodlit courts, is 100m away. The 36 hole Sevvy Ballesteros designed Novo Sancti Petri golf course is a 5 minute drive away.

The nearby town of Chiclana de la Frontera has a bustling indoor public market, open daily except Sundays (8am-2pm), which sells fresh fish, meat and vegetables. The ancient and historic city of Cadiz is about 25 km to the north. The increasingly trendy town of Conil De La Frontera is a 15 min drive to the south. Further afield, Seville, Tarifa, Ronda, Arcos de la Frontera, Gibraltar and even Tangiers in Morocco are all easily reached on day trips.

Access to the area from outside Spain is easy via a number of airports – the nearest, Jerez, is about 40 km (45 mins) away, whilst Seville (90 mins), Gibraltar (90 mins) and Malaga (less than 3 hours) and Faro in Portugal (3 hours) are all convenient and are served by a number of different airlines. Internal road links are fast and easy on a network of new roads and motorways.

Though it is by no means essential, it is certainly desireable to have a car to make the most of your holiday. Car rental is relatively inexpensive in Spain (especially outside July / August) and is readily available at all airports and also locally - see links page.
